Floridians for a Fair Shake Expands Congressional Accountability Campaign

Congressmen Vern Buchanan, Brian Mast Focus of 7-Figure Organizing and Ad Campaign

SARASOTA — Floridians for a Fair Shake, the grassroots organization working to highlight Congressman Brian Mast’s record on the #TrumpTax and health care in Congressional District 18, is expanding its effort to also hold Congressman Vern Buchanan accountable for his record on taxes and health care in Congressional District16. Floridians for a Fair Shake will double its seven figure organizing and ad campaign to support this effort.

“With their votes on taxes and health care, Brian Mast and Vern Buchanan have put corporations, millionaires and billionaires ahead of the interests of working Floridians,” said Stephen Gaskill, Communications Director of Floridians for a Fair Shake. “Our effort aims to hold them accountable for their votes that boost the interests of the wealthiest at the expense of Florida families, and undercuts the needs of those of us who don’t live in beachfront mansions.”

Earlier this month, Floridians for a Fair Shake launched its grassroots advocacy campaign in CD-18. The campaign in Vern Buchanan’s district will support ongoing efforts to educate Floridians through local engagement, and digital and television advertising throughout the district.

“I have dedicated a lifetime to advocating for Florida families to have access to the full range of quality, affordable health care we all deserve,” said Barbara Zdravecky, former President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida. “Since he has been in Congress, Vern Buchanan has done the opposite and his constituents have a right to know that and to hold him to account.”

The #TrumpTax is proving to be a giveaway to Florida’s wealthiest, with 60 percent of Floridians receiving only nine percent of the benefits, according to a report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). Rich corporations, foreign investors, and the wealthiest are the major beneficiaries. Further, the #TrumpTax bill implemented changes that destabilized the Affordable Care Act, putting an estimated 873,000 Floridians at risk for losing their health care coverage.

The failed Republican replacement for the Affordable Care Act, which both Mast and Buchanan supported, would have caused 2 million Floridians to lose their health care coverage. Florida currently ranks 48th for health care coverage, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“For me, these attacks on the Affordable Care Act and my access to health care are personal,” said Treasure Coast resident Paula Albright, a member of the Fair Shake Advisory Committee. “I want congressmen like Brian Mast and Vern Buchanan to know what they’re doing is hurting real people in Florida.”
