HEALTH CARE TOWN HALL TO FEATURE DISCUSSION ON ACCESSIBILITY, AFFORDABILITY

Advocates, Experts to Address Questions From Area Residents; Congressman Vern Buchanan Invited to Participate

SARASOTA — Polls consistently show health care is a major concern for Florida voters. After the failed attempt to repeal health care, Republicans in Congress have resorted to sabotage to weaken the system as a way to lower public support for the Affordable Care Act. As a result, Florida’s health care premiums will increase 16.9 percent in 2019, raising the cost for Florida families by $1,011, according to a report issued by the Center for American Progress.

Floridians for a Fair Shake, working in CD-16 to educate voters about the health care and tax votes of Congressman Vern Buchanan, is partnering with Planned Parenthood to host a Health Care Town Hall for area voters featuring policy experts, advocates and members of the community. Scheduled for Selby Public Library on Saturday, June 30 — at the beginning of the Independence Day Congressional recess — we have also invited Congressman Vern Buchanan to participate. The text of our invitation letter is below:

Dear Congressman Buchanan:

As you know, health care is the defining issue in Florida right now. Florida’s health care premiums will rise 16.9 percent in 2019, increasing costs for the average Florida family by $1,011, according to the Center for American Progress. As such, we are writing to invite you to participate in a town hall on health care issues scheduled for Saturday, June 30 from 11am to 1pm at the Selby Public Library, located at 1331 1st St. in downtown Sarasota.

Our group, Floridians for a Fair Shake, is partnering with Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates to sponsor the event, which will feature a discussion of health care issues from health experts and advocates, as well as questions and comments from members of the community.

We hope you can join us, since this is at the beginning of the Independence Day Congressional recess and your constituents haven’t had an opportunity to hear from you at a town hall since March 18, 2017.

Thank you in advance for considering this request. We hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Sarah Scully,  Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates

Mollie Saumier,  Floridians for a Fair Shake

We will update press shortly about our program agenda and speakers.
