ICYMI: ANALYSIS FINDS 100% OF COVERAGE ON VERN BUCHANAN IS ABOUT ILL-TIMED YACHT PURCHASE
EMBATTLED CONGRESSMAN’S COVERAGE IS NEARLY ALWAYS ABOUT THE YACHT HE BOUGHT ON THE SAME DAY HE VOTED HIMSELF A $2 MILLION TAX BREAK
SARASOTA — Congressman Vern Buchanan’s purchase of a multimillion dollar yacht — with a loan from a foreign bank that lobbied him — on the same day he voted for the Trump Tax law has made him a national symbol of greed and corruption in Congress. Two reports — an analysis of Buchanan’s press coverage and a review of political pundits’ campaign vulnerability ratings — underscore how much that message resonates.
The Tampa Bay Times reported on both studies, while announcing another television ad hammering Buchanan for his yacht purchase. After the story broke in July, fully 100% of national news coverage of Buchanan mentioned the yacht, and national coverage mentions remained high in August, at 75%.
At the same time, most prognosticators increased Buchanan’s electoral vulnerability, based on the yacht issue.
Floridians for a Fair Shake Communications Director Stephen Gaskill issued the following statement:
“Congressman Vern Buchanan’s ill-timed yacht purchase exemplifies the greed and corruption permeating this Congress. Giving massive tax breaks to millionaires and giant corporations is bad enough, but Buchanan wrote the bill to give himself a $2 million tax cut, and on the day it passed he rewarded himself with a yacht. After spending years voting to take away his constituents’ health care and adding to the deficit as an excuse to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, there are only so many ways to say Vern Buchanan is out of touch.”
