ICYMI: REPUBLICANS ANNOUNCE PLAN TO SLASH SOCIAL SECURITY, MEDICARE AND MEDICAID TO PAY FOR BUDGET-BUSTING TAX SCAM

CONGRESSMAN VERN BUCHANAN, THIS IS YOUR PARTY: YOU OK WITH THIS?

From Newsweek:

After instituting a $1.5 trillion tax cut and signing off on a $675 billion budget for the Department of Defense, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that the only way to lower the record-high federal deficit would be to cut entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s not a Republican problem,” McConnell said of the deficit, which grew 17 percent to $779 billion in fiscal year 2018. The deficit has increased 77 percent since McConnell became majority leader in 2015.

SARASOTA — The budget-busting #TrumpTaxScam that gave massive tax breaks to millionaires, billionaires, and wealthy corporations has blown a trillion-dollar hole in the deficit. Now — as predicted by many — Republican leaders are calling for cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to pay for it. Congressman Vern Buchanan, one of the wealthiest members of Congress, received a $2.1 million tax break from the tax law, and bought a multimillion dollar yacht on the same day he voted for the tax scam. He’s also shepherded a second mammoth tax break through Congress, which would provide him with another unnecessary tax break.

Stephen Gaskill, Communications Director of grassroots advocacy group Floridians for a Fair Shake, issued the following statement:

“We’ve been saying all along that Republicans want to pay for the millionaire tax giveaway by slashing Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, but we didn’t anticipate they’d be so blunt about announcing it. It’s unconscionable to balance the budget on the backs of working Floridians, who have been struggling to keep up in this economy to pay for housing and health care. As Floridians go to the polls, they need to remember who’s looking out for them, and it’s clearly not Vern Buchanan. As one of the prime beneficiaries of these tax scams, Buchanan is clearly out of touch with the real needs of his constituents. It’s time to hold Vern Buchanan accountable for these blatant acts of corruption.”
