ROUGH SEAS AHEAD AS CONGRESSMAN VERN BUCHANAN MOVES TOWARD ELECTION DAY
SARASOTA —Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-16) is looking ahead toward the general election in November but he should instead be looking over his shoulder at the ethical issues surrounding him and his fellow congressional Republicans. Buchanan purchased a multimillion dollar yacht on the same day he voted to give himself and other millionaires a massive tax break, and investigative reporters recently revealed that Buchanan purchased the yacht with a loan from a foreign bank that lobbied for the passage of the Republican tax law.
Floridians for a Fair Shake Communications Director Stephen Gaskill issued this statement:
“As congressional Republicans and senior officials in President Trump’s inner circle face growing ethical issues, Congressman Buchanan has his own problems. After supporting measures to undermine and sabotage access to quality, affordable health care for constituents in his own district, Buchanan now faces questions surrounding his purchase of a multimillion dollar yacht the same day he voted in favor of the tax measure that overwhelmingly benefited wealthy individuals and corporations at the expense of working families. Voters want elected representatives they can trust and Congressman Buchanan is under water.”
Key facts on Buchanan’s ethics issues:
- Buchanan has been under fire for his ethical lapses several times since he’s been in Congress. In 2011, the Federal Election Commission charged Buchanan with making illegal campaign contributions through his car dealership.
- In 2012, the Office of Congressional Ethics concluded there was “substantial reason to believe” Buchanan violated ethics laws by failing to report his position with a half-dozen firms, including real estate investment companies and his personal foundation.
- And Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) once named Buchanan “one of the most corrupt Members of Congress.”
