TUESDAY: FLORIDIANS FOR A FAIR SHAKE TO DELIVER RESULTS OF HEALTH CARE COMMUNITY TOWN HALLS TO CONGRESSMEN BRIAN MAST AND VERN BUCHANAN

West Palm Beach — Grassroots advocacy organization Floridians for a Fair Shake sponsored Health Care Community Town Halls in Port St. Lucie and Sarasota to hear Floridians’ concerns about their health care needs and issues with increased costs and access, thanks to Republican sabotage. Fair Shake will deliver written feedback from participants and video excerpts of the events to Congressmen Brian Mast and Vern Buchanan tomorrow, July 31st. Both Mast and Buchanan were invited to the events but neither participated.

Congressman Mast and Congressman Buchanan each voted to repeal and undermine  the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would have taken away health care from more than two million Floridians — that’s 74,800 of Mast’s own constituents and 64,000 of Buchanan’s. The Trump administration and congressional Republicans like Mast and Buchanan, unable to gut the ACA outright, have been sabotaging access to health care (slashing fundingbreaking promises about containing drug costs, and suspending insurer payments) which has resulted in rising costs, reduced access and general uncertainty about the health care system. Last week, a new report showed rising health care premiums for a family of four due to health care sabotage; in Mast’s district, the increase is $2,750, and in Buchanan’s it is $2,620. The return of exclusions for pre-existing conditions puts more than 7.8 million Floridians at risk of losing their coverage altogether.

The Health Care Community Town Halls featured health care and policy professionals, as well as community members who shared their stories, discussed their challenges, and expressed their concerns for our health care system and what they expect from policymakers and elected officials.

“In both Town Halls, we brought together a cross section of residents to talk about how health care sabotage is impacting them,” said Stephen Gaskill, communications director of Floridians for a Fair Shake. “These are constituents of Congressmen Mast and Buchanan, and they wanted to share their stories and their frustration of how their members’ votes to undermine access to affordable health care has harmed their families.”
